With the rapid development of functional reflective fabrics, rainbow reflective materials, due to their unique gradient color reflective effect, have become a mainstream choice for fashion customization and security clothing. For apparel manufacturers, accurately distinguishing between rainbow reflective fabric and rainbow reflective heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is key to balancing product appearance, wearing comfort, processing efficiency, and long-term durability.
I.Basic Definitions and Core Structural Principles
What is Rainbow Reflective Fabric?
YGM Rainbow Reflective Fabric is an integrated textile-based reflective material. The base fabric is made of 100% polyester, polyester-cotton blend, or elastic fabric, with a surface layer of precision micro-glass bead reflective layer and a nano-chromatic color-changing coating. Using an integrated coating composite process, the reflective functional layer is tightly bonded to the base fabric, eliminating the need for a separate adhesive layer, thus achieving extremely high structural stability.
Its signature rainbow effect originates from the optical dispersion principle of the micro-glass beads. When light shines on the fabric from different angles, it is refracted, reflected, and scattered through the nano-coating and glass bead structure, presenting a full-spectrum dynamic gradient effect of purple, blue, green, and gold, with natural and rich color gradations. Unlike ordinary static reflective materials, its gloss changes in real time with the angle and intensity of light, giving it a prominent three-dimensional texture.
Rainbow reflective heat transfer vinyl is a thin-film decorative reflective material composed of three layers: a PET release film, a rainbow reflective functional layer, and a hot melt adhesive layer. Essentially, it is not a textile fabric but is used solely as a finishing material for post-printing decoration.
Its production principle is as follows: Reflective glass beads and iridescent pigments are coated onto a PET film, with hot melt adhesive pre-placed at the bottom. High-temperature hot pressing melts the adhesive layer, adhering it to the garment. After cooling and peeling off the PET film, only a thin layer of reflective adhesive remains on the fabric surface.
Rainbow reflective heat transfer vinyl offers a variety of visual effects, including holographic and metallic textures. Apparel brands use it to add reflective markings and high-visibility embellishments to garments and accessories.
II.Comparison of Core Performance, Parameters, and Actual Results
Reflective Brightness Parameters
YGM Rainbow Reflective Fabric: Retroreflective brightness up to 475 cd/lx/m², with uniform and dense glass beads, meeting the EN ISO 20471 high-visibility safety standard, providing outstanding long-distance warning effect at night;
YGM Rainbow Reflective HTV: Standard reflective brightness > 30 cd/lx/m², significantly lower than the fabric version, only meeting short-distance decorative reflective requirements and unsuitable for the warning requirements of professional safety workwear.
YGM’s Quality Control Standards
Rainbow Reflective Fabric: The reflective layer is integrally laminated with the base fabric, exhibiting extremely strong adhesion. It undergoes a complete set of standardized quality inspection processes: retroreflection coefficient testing, glass bead fastness sand drop testing, high-magnification microscope surface defect screening, and wash durability testing. Strictly adhering to ISO 6330, ISO 15797, and ISO 3175 international wash standards, it can withstand 80 standard industrial washes without bead detachment, delamination, or significant reduction in reflectivity. It is abrasion-resistant and resistant to repeated friction, suitable for garments intended for long-term, reusable use.
Rainbow Reflective HTV: Relies on hot melt adhesive bonding, resulting in a low adhesion limit. It can typically withstand only 30-50 washes. After multiple washes, it is prone to edge peeling, delamination, iridescent coating peeling, and reflectivity reduction. High-temperature machine washing and strong friction scenarios cause even faster wear and tear, lacking long-term durability. Meanwhile, HTV is certified by Oeko-Tex 100, making it safe and free of harmful substances, suitable for short-term close-fitting creative and cultural clothing.
III.Processing Technology and Advantages/Disadvantages
Rainbow Reflective Fabric: Integrated Cutting and Sewing Process
Compatible with all conventional garment sewing equipment, simple process: slit cutting → overlocking → sewing and splicing, no special heat transfer equipment required, low processing threshold, high batch yield.
Advantages: Rainbow reflective fabric can be used to process full-piece reflective jackets, reflective pants, large-area decorative pieces, reflective banners, reflective pet clothing, etc., supports arbitrary irregular cutting, sewing will not damage the glass bead reflective layer, strong stability in mass garment production.
Disadvantages: Rainbow reflective fabric limits designers to designing patterns based on the seams. You cannot easily apply it as a standalone pattern.
Rainbow Reflective HTV: Heat Transfer Process
Requires professional heat transfer equipment. YGM’s reference heat transfer parameters: temperature 130-140℃, pressure 4-6kg/cm², heat transfer time 10-15 seconds. Cold-tear process, the PET release film must be completely cooled before peeling off, low operational error tolerance.
Complete Operation Process: Pattern mirroring and layout → Cutting with engraving machine/laser cutter → Waste removal and cleaning of small patterns → Laying the garment flat as a mat → High-temperature pressing with heat-insulating paper → Cooling and peeling off the film;
Advantages: Rainbow reflective HTV supports customized patterns and colors.
Disadvantages: Requires very strict operation. Any errors such as parameter setting deviations, uneven pressure, or insufficient cooling can lead to bubbling, pattern peeling, and edge cracking. Therefore, rainbow reflective HTV is only suitable for small-area logos.
IV.How to Accurately Choose Between Two Rainbow Reflective Materials
There is no absolute superiority or inferiority between rainbow reflective fabric and rainbow HTV. The core differences lie in the area of application, usage period, and safety performance requirements:
Choose YGM rainbow reflective fabric: Prioritizes high reflectivity and safety levels, large-area garment production, long-term washability, high-end trendy texture, and stable mass production;
Choose YGM rainbow reflective HTV: Suitable for small-area logo decoration and intricate cartoon/text designs.
As a source manufacturer with 20 years of experience in reflective material manufacturing, YGM’s entire product line has passed multiple authoritative certifications including ISO quality system, Oeko-Tex100, and EN ISO 20471, and is equipped with a full set of laboratory testing equipment. Each batch of products undergoes triple quality inspection before leaving the factory, including reflectivity, washing, and surface defects.
YGM supports customization of fabric width, base fabric material, and iridescent effects. It also supports custom pattern making for HTV designs and colors, and can simultaneously send samples of both materials for comparative testing, providing a one-stop reflective material solution for global garment factories and trendy brands.
